The 2010 remake of Clash of The Titans is like a brand new jigsaw puzzle except all the pieces are from different puzzles. Some of them fit together, like Sam Worthington’s constant need to be a badass with lines like “don’t look that bitch in the eye,” but then there are elements that fail completely like the completely terrible post production 3D.
Of what I know about the original Clash of The Titans, this films does follow the plot of the original to a point, going so far as to put one of the original’s most iconic characters into the film. Perseus is found floating in a suitcase with his dead mother and is taken aboard a ship by a fisherman that would become his adopted father. Jump 20 years and a lot of shit goes down and that’s basically it. Clash of The Titans has no real plot that needs to be talked about because it just doesn’t care.
There really isn’t much to be said for the direction of this film. I am a fan of pretty much all of Louis Leterrier’s work… At least until now. This film is heavily under-directed. Minus two fairly decent action sequences the movie just falls flat and is boring overall. I remember sitting in the theater thinking, when is something interesting going to happen. That was during one of the heavy action sequences.
As for the acting, it’s meh at best. We all know by now that Sam Worthington can carry a shitty movie (see Terminator Salvation), but the problem here is that the director has no vision so there is nothing to work off of. At least in Salvation McG has a clear vision of what he wanted and Worthington was able to play with that. Here, Leterrier just walked in and said “camera here… what now?” The supporting cast isn’t much better either. Zeus played by Liam Neeson goes through more moodswings than a pregnant teenager and Hades just has a really creepy voice going for him… Like the direction, it just feels like the actors didn’t care.
But none of that compares to the biggest travesty of all, the 3D. It is awful. Everything you heard about the awful look of post production 3D is true. The 3D turns what would be fairly good looking shots into a British television show. I have never been sold on 3D even after seeing AVATAR and all this movie did was confirm my worst fears. By movies end, my eyes, head, and mind were all in severe pain.
Clash of The Titans is a mess of a movie with only 2 decent action sequences. If you really want to see this movie I would suggest waiting until it is available on Netflix but if you really need to see it in theaters, do yourself a favor and save some money on the undeserving premiums of 3D and go see it the way it was meant to be seen, in 2D.
