I’ve always said that if a comedy made me laugh then it succeeded on some level. So while I can’t say that Hot Tub Time Machine was a complete failure, I can say with certainty that it is a bad film. It is full of that dry, pointless humor that has no place in comedy.
This would normally be the point in the review where I would go into the plot of the film but, do I really need to. The title of the film pretty much sums it all up. It is a movie about a Hot Tub Time Machine. Now, some people will try to impart an underlying meaning to this film like “look it’s all about having self worth” and “your future is what you make of it” but I call BS on all of that.
Most of the cast is forgettable in this film. It is clear the casting of Cusack was a “this gets the movie made” decision. Corddry is the “wild man” in this movie and he really doesn’t pull it off well. He is very much hit and miss throughout his career. I loved the guy during his time on The Daily Show. I dug him in the Harold and Kumar sequel. I hated him in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and now Hot Tub Time Machine can be spoken of in the same vein. Clark Duke is meh at best. Even though he looks like the guy who would normally play the nerd role, the best role I ever saw him in was Sex Drive where he played the confident rich kid. The only redeeming part of this cast is Craig Robinson. Most of his jokes are spot on, the problem is that all of these jokes are in the trailer so they are already stale.
There is no point to attack the story of this film because it was full aware of itself. The entire movie was played for tongue and cheek gags which usually I support. But here it just didn’t come together. The movie was just boring and I say it is undeserving of most of the hype it is receiving.
