Will Repo Men win any Oscars next year? No. Will Repo Men be considered one of the greatest films of all time? No. Will Repo Men be remembered for having enough balls to have one of the most ambitious endings in recent memory and gain a cult following come DVD/Blu Ray release? Hell, yes! Repo Men is a really cool film that unfortunately will slide under the radar.
The plot of Repo Men is very similar to the 2008 rock opera, Repo! The Genetic Opera. In an alternate future reality, a company known as The Union has developed universally compatible artificial organs. Everything you can think of, liver, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, eyes, ears, lips, noses, you name it, and they make it. But these organs are very expensive (despite inflation of course); so many people opt for a payment plan. If the said customer falls behind on their payments after the 3 month grace period The Union sends repo men to reclaim the organ and leave the “customer” to die. So when the hero of the film, Remy (Jude Law) needs a new heart because of a faulty defibrillator (BTW I think this is one of the first films I have ever seen that actually gets right what a defibrillator actually does, stops hearts, not starts them), he gets one… without his consent. Suddenly he begins to realize the harm he has been causing and goes on a mission to delete himself and everyone else from The Union’s system.
Of course the first thing anyone will look to this film for is some decent action. Yes, it does deliver. There is plenty of hand to hand combat, gun fights, and hacksaw wielding psychos to make all you gore fans happy. Jude Law kicks ass, Forest Whitiker kicks ass, Alice Braga kicks ass, Liev… Well, you get the idea. Is it nonstop from start to finish? No. But, the editing would not have you believe that. This is a very tight film. It is paced very well for something in this genre. A lot of running, shouting, and fighting, but it is all woven together so nicely that you forget how paper thin the logic really is.
But, none of that is nearly as note worthy as the ending. I don’t want to spoil it because it is so good but let me say a few things about it.
I think that says enough, if you want to see more go check out some other reviews. You will not see the ending coming. This reviewer promises that it will leave your jaw open for the few minutes after the movie ends. It comes out of left field and leaves you with a sense of downright respect for the choices that director Miguel Sapochnik made throughout the film.
Repo Men, at its core, is an action packed, bloody, sci-fi, adventure, thrill ride. Its got all the elements that make an entertaining March film. But the ending makes it so much more. There is really nothing else to say except, go see it for yourself.
