Through its years on the air waves, 24 has provided us with ultimate Shakespearian tragedy. Jack Bauer is, above all else, a tortured soul. Everything he loves, everything he cares for, everything he fights for, seems to come to a tragic end. The idea of patriotism is all he has, and all he will ever have. He can’t have love, so instead he takes solace in the knowledge that he will fight till the end, for us.

After nine years of presidential treason, nukes, poison gas, EMPs, and countless unnamed dead terrorists, it all came to an end with the final two hours of the ground breaking series, and boy, what a finale it was. First off, the finale takes a second to reminds us why the show is the revolutionary it is, because, for one last time, we hear Kiefer’s voice say “events occur in real time” right before we start on the epic finale.

In 2001, America suffered one of the worst tragedies in it’s over 200 year history. After words, we were vulnerable, scared, and needed a new hero. That hero came in the form of an unapologetic, ruthless soldier that would fight for everything we stand for, no matter what the cost. That hero, was Jack Bauer. A real life Superman, he is everything we needed in our darkest hour. 24 not only revolutionized the look of TV, it changed the way we defined it, and the characters it creates… Forever.
